Optician Hiring Tips: How to Write an Optician Job Ad
Optician hiring can be a challenge, but these are key members of any optometry practice. They work extensively with your patients and are often their first point of contact. The right optician will have a diverse skill set encompassing sales, customer service, dispensing, frame/lens selection, inventory management, and much more – plus, depending on your location and hiring preferences – a state license and/or national certification.
The BLS predicts employment of opticians will grow 15% from 2016 to 2026. Competition for these professionals is fierce, and you’ll need an optician hiring strategy that includes well-written job ads if you want to fill your open positions.
Check out these tips and examples to learn how to write an optician job ad that will attract top talent for your practice.
Optician Job Ad Writing Tips – The Basics
Regardless of the position you’re hiring for, always keep in mind that your job ad is exactly that – an advertisement. If you want to catch the attention of top optician candidates, follow these job ad writing best practices:
- Ensure your ad is easy and inviting to read. Avoid lengthy paragraphs and/or laundry lists of bullets. In a candidate’s market, you can’t expect job seekers to read a novel!
- Speak directly to your audience by using personal pronouns such as “you,” “we,” “our,” etc.
- Put your marketing hat on and use specific keywords and phrases in your ad that will enable it to be found via online search engines.
- Include an EOE statement clearly outlining your fair hiring practices.
Optician Job Ad Sections & Examples
We’ve laid out each section of an optician job ad in our suggested order with examples for each.
1. Job Title
Keep titles as short, simple, and straightforward as possible to maximize your apply rates. Research shows that titles with 1–3 words have the highest apply rates and the most applicant clicks. Also, avoid overly creative or clever titles like “Eye Care Guru” or “Optical Maven.” You’ll confuse the reader and significantly impact your ad’s ability to be found via search (see tip #3 above).
Examples:
Optician
Licensed Optician
Optical Sales Associate
2. Lead In
When thinking about how to write an optician job ad, don’t underestimate the power of the “hook.” This comprises the first few sentences of your posting that must successfully grab the reader’s attention. Speak directly to your audience and compel them to consider joining your team.
Example:
If you’re a team player excited by the latest vision care technologies and passionate about customer service, you belong here! With three state-of-the-art practices in the Frederick area and one more opening in January 2019, we are looking to add an energetic, fashion-forward optician to our growing family.
3. Optician Job Description & Benefits
To convince an optician to apply to your open position, you must paint a clear picture of what it’s like to work in your practice. In today’s candidate-driven market, simply copying/pasting in a page-long optician job description from your HR manual won’t cut it. What makes your practice a great place to work? What opportunities do employees have to grow? What are your benefits?
Example:
As an optician in our award-winning practice, you’ll be:
- Delivering exceptional customer service in collaboration with dedicated team members
- Taking measurements and fitting eyeglasses and contact lenses for customers to help them see, look, and feel their best
- Serving as a product expert for customers and team members alike
- Maintaining a clean, organized, and welcoming atmosphere
- Enjoying a paperless environment with the latest patient recordkeeping systems and solutions
- Playing a key role in continually improving and expanding our practice offerings
As an integral member of our team, you’ll get:
- Excellent health, dental, vision, and life insurance
- Generous employee discounts
- Competitive salary and monthly bonuses
- 100% employer-paid continuing courses, conferences, etc.
- Flexible scheduling options

4. Your Practice Culture
Add a separate section to provide the reader with a glimpse into your unique practice culture. Unsure what to write? There’s no better source for this type of information than your current employees. Ask them why they love working for you and what they think a prospective new hire should know about your organization.
Example: While we’re known as the most “high-tech” optometry practice in the area, our passion for people is what really sets us apart. Lunch is catered at least once per month and our employees organize chili cookoffs, birthday and anniversary parties, golf outings, and other teambuilding activities. We also volunteer together during the holidays for neighborhood soup kitchens and food banks.
5. Key Requirements/Qualifications
It may be tempting to include a bulleted list of “must haves” in this section of your optician job ad, but try your best to keep it brief beyond the basics (years of experience and license/certification if applicable to your practice). Use personal pronouns to maintain an inviting tone.
Example:
If you’re an optician with at least 2 years of experience ready to join an innovative and customer-focused practice, we look forward to receiving your application. Associate’s degree and ABO Certification are a plus!
6. How to Apply
This section of your job ad is simple, yet incredibly important. You’ve successfully convinced a candidate to apply – don’t miss out on a great hire because your application instructions are missing and/or confusing. Make it as easy as possible for opticians to apply with crystal-clear steps.
Examples:
Please visit www.practicewebsite.com/careers to complete your application.
Please email your cover letter and resume to [email protected] and include “Optician Job #12345” in your subject line.
Bonus Tip: If you’re posting a job on iHireOptometry, choose our Quick Apply option so opticians can submit their applications in just a few clicks.
7. Closing
In the final section of your posting, set expectations for when applicants can expect to hear from you and when interviews will be scheduled. If you want top talent for your team, you must treat candidates like your most valued customers – never leave them in the dark.
Example:
After you submit your application, we’ll confirm receipt within one business day via phone or email. If you are chosen for an interview, we will contact you by [Date]. Thanks again for your interest in joining our practice!
You want qualified and dedicated opticians for your practice. Passionate and customer-focused opticians want to work for a company that matches their values. Job postings may only be one part of your optician hiring strategy, but they are a critical piece of your overall recruiting plan. Use our optician job ad writing tips and examples to craft one that fits your practice and maximizes your chances of finding the right hire.
