Ophthalmic Technician Jobs in North Carolina
An Ophthalmic Technician, also known as an eye care technician, plays an integral role in the optometry industry by assisting Optometrists and Ophthalmologists in providing eye care to patients. Their typical duties include conducting diagnostic tests, monitoring and recording patients' ocular conditions, assisting with patient care and education, and maintaining ophthalmic instruments or equipment. They are often responsible for initial patient evaluation, performing a variety of tasks such as measuring vision, administering eye medications, and helping with surgical procedures.
To be successful in this role, an Ophthalmic Technician should have excellent hand-eye coordination, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills as they work closely with patients of all ages. While a high school diploma is usually required for entry-level positions, many employers prefer candidates with an associate's degree in Ophthalmic Medical Technology or a related field. Important certifications include Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA), Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT), and Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT) from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO). Prior to becoming an Ophthalmic Technician, an individual might have roles as a Medical Assistant, a Patient Service Representative, or a Certified Nursing Assistant, gaining valuable experience in the healthcare field.
