An ophthalmic technician is a medical professional who works alongside an optometrist or ophthalmologist to provide patient care in the field of eye care. They perform various diagnostic tests and procedures, record data and measurements, and perform basic office and administrative tasks. The primary role of an Optometric Technician is to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of visual disorders and other related ocular conditions and to facilitate efficient patient care. They work directly with patients to perform various tests and assessments, such as visual acuity, color vision, and depth perception, OCT, visual field and other testing, and help prepare patients for examinations and procedures. Additionally, they manage the day-to-day operations of the clinic, including scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records and supporting a positive experience for patients/customers.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Obtains medical history on all patients.

Conducts preliminary eye exams, such as screening for vision problems or measuring intraocular pressure.

Administers diagnostic tests and procedures, such as OCT, retinal photography or visual field testing.

Assist with procedures, such as laser eye surgery or injections.

Collect patient health histories and documenting medical records.

Educate patients about eye care and vision health, such as the proper use of contact lenses or eyeglasses, amsler grid testing, and drop administration technique.

Perform office and administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments or managing inventory

Prepare patients for surgeries.

Assist in the calibration and maintenance of equipment.

Assist in ophthalmic procedures under the direct supervision of the provider.

Support and assist with education of patients.

Administer medications and topical treatments at the direction of the provider.

Responsible for the set-up and maintenance schedule of equipment.

Stay updated on the latest advancements in ophthalmology and participate in continuing education and professional development.

Other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Requires sitting for up to seven hours per day, four hours at a time. Standing for up to four hours per day, one hour at a time. Requires some manual dexterity and various hand movements, typing, equipment manipulation, etc. Occasionally requires lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and assisting less-mobile patients. Occasionally requires reaching above shoulder level. Must have the ability to hear as it relates to normal conversation and to see as it relates to general vision.

EDUCATION:

High School diploma or GED equivalent required

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or Ophthalmic Technician (COT) preferred or Ophthalmology experience minimum 1 year. Compassionate and patient-centered approach to care and a desire to learn. Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
