Job Overview
We are seeking a bilingual (Spanish-speaking) Optician with extensive experience in optical dispensing, patient education, and eyewear sales to join our team. The Optician is responsible for assisting patients in selecting eyeglasses or contact lenses that meet their prescription and visual needs. This role involves interpreting prescriptions from Optometrists or Ophthalmologists, recommending suitable frames and lenses, and ensuring a proper fit. The Optician also maintains accurate patient records, prepares and verifies optical orders, and provides education on eyewear care. In addition, the Optician collaborates closely with clinical staff to support coordinated patient care and with billing staff to ensure accurate insurance verification and processing of eyewear-related charges.
Key Responsibilities
Assist Patients with Eyewear Selection: Guide patients in choosing eyeglass frames and lenses based on prescription, face shape, lifestyle needs, and personal style.
Interpret Prescriptions: Accurately interpret ophthalmologist or optometrist prescriptions to ensure proper lens type, thickness, and coating recommendations.
Measure and Fit Eyeglasses: Take precise measurements (pupillary distance, segment height, bridge width) and ensure proper frame adjustments for comfort and visual accuracy.
Order and Dispense Eyewear: Submit orders to optical labs, track delivery timelines, and ensure quality control before dispensing glasses or contact lenses to patients.
Adjust and Repair Eyewear: Perform minor repairs and adjustments to frames, including tightening screws, replacing nose pads, and realigning frames for optimal fit.
Educate Patients on Eyewear Care: Instruct patients on proper care and handling of their eyeglasses and contact lenses, including cleaning, storage, and usage.
Maintain Inventory and Display: Organize, restock, and manage frame inventory; ensure the optical area is clean, professional, and patient-friendly.
Insurance and Billing Support: Verify vision insurance benefits, provide cost estimates, and assist with billing for eyewear products when necessary.
Collaborate with Clinical Team: Communicate with technicians, doctors, and front desk staff to ensure coordinated care and a positive patient experience.
Stay Updated on Optical Trends: Maintain knowledge of current eyewear trends, lens technology, and product offerings to better assist patients.
Qualifications & Skills
Experience: Three (3) to five (5) years of optical and sales experience, and experience working in ophthalmology.
Attention to Detail & Accuracy: Maintains high accuracy when entering patient data and coordinating with optical providers to ensure smooth patient flow.
Software Proficiency: Experienced in using EHR, practiced management systems, and optical-specific tools (e.g., scheduling, material ordering, order status updates).
Confidentiality & Compliance: Understands and adheres to HIPAA regulations and optical/ophthalmic industry standards to protect patient information and ensure secure data handling.
Organizational & Time Management Skills: Ability to prioritize tasks and adjust quickly to changes in the daily schedule to ensure smooth optical operations without delays.
Problem-solving Skills: Uses sound judgment to adjust appointments while maintaining continuity of care and minimizing disruption for providers and patients.
Communication : Demonstrates clear, professional, and compassionate communication when interacting with patients, providers, and staff.
Insurance Knowledge: Understands vision and medical insurance plans, including eligibility, authorization, and material requirements. Accurately verifies coverage, explains patient benefits and ensures proper documentation for billing and claims processing.
Qualifications
ABO Certification or working towards certification
Bilingual (Spanish/English) required
Familiarity with optical inventory software and lab ordering systems (e.g., Eyefinity, Essilor, VSP)
Ability to travel to satellite clinic locations as needed
Availability to work Monday through Friday, with rotating Saturdays required
