OF DUTIES:
  • Assists in the delivery of primary health care and patient care management.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Requires corrected near and far vision and hearing to normal ranges.
  • Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours.
  • Potential exposure to communicable diseases or potentially infected bodily fluids.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment.
  • May be called upon to assist physician at hospital or outside facility.
  • Public environment.
  • Bloodborne area.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares patients for examination and treatment. Takes patient histories and vital signs as required.
  • Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments.
  • Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization.
  • Assists physicians in preparing for minor surgeries, physicals, exams, etc.
  • Assists with scheduling of tests, X-rays, and treatments.
  • Screens telephone calls for referral to nurse or physician. Takes and delivers appropriate phone messages.
  • Orders and maintains clinical and office supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains patient files, records, and other information.
  • Schedules surgical procedures at the hospital and clinic. Schedules H&P appointments if nurse is unavailable.
  • Obtains pre-certification for office/hospital surgical procedures and forwards the information to the appropriate physician/nurse.
  • Labels and maintains proper storage of specimens and provides them for courier pick-up.
  • Works under direction of Staff LPN or RN.
  • Assist Physician with Patient testing such as EKG’s, Pap’s, cultures.
  • Assist Patient with scheduling of labs and other appointments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of medical practice and care to assist in giving patient care.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
  • Skill in assisting in a variety of treatments as directed.
  • Skill in taking vital signs.
  • Skill in maintaining records and recording test results.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining department quality assurance.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to work with computers.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to be a team player.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assisting Program

EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous Medical Office experience.
  • Oncology MA Position - Scribing experience preferred.

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE:

  • Certification or registration as medical assistant (Preferred)
  • CPR certification.
