- Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Director of Nursing and direction from the health care provider, the Optometry Assistant performs a variety of tasks to assist the optometrist in eye examinations and corrective procedures. They record patient medical histories and help prepare the patient for the vision examination. They also assist with tests that help ensure the accurate diagnosis and treatment of a diseased eye.
- Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
- Obtains and records patient's preliminary case history.
- Maintains records, schedules appointments, performs bookkeeping, correspondence, and filing.
- Prepares patient for vision examination; assists in testing for near and far acuity, depth perception, macula integrity, color perception, and visual field, utilizing ocular testing apparatus.
- Instructs patient in care and use of glasses or contact lenses.
- Under order of the optometrist, perform patient in vision therapy, exercising eye using special lens, filters and instruments.
- Pre-testing I- auto refraction, lensometry, tonometry and topography
- Pre-testing II - preliminary case history including current medical conditions . Visual acuities, dial in, photopter, color vision and drop instillation
- Maintains inventory of materials and cleans instruments.
- Perform other duties as required and/or directed.

- Ability to assist in the development of department administrative directives as required .
- Ability to assist in investigative analysis and make effective recommendations as required .
- Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative reports containing findings, conclusions and recommendations as required.
- Ability to prepare clear, accurate and informative reports of progress of organizational units, results of research and reviews, and annual reports of accomplishments, future goals, and objectives.
- Ability to work effectively with associates, as well as with supervisors, in the various units of the organization.
Experience/Education Required:
- High School Diploma required
- Optometry Certification preferred
- One year minimum experience as an optometry assistant/technician
