University of Pittsburgh Physicians is hiring a full-time Ophthalmic Technician to support UPMC Vision Institute-Oakland located at 203 Lothrop Street 6th Floor Pittsburgh, PA 15213. This role will work Monday through Friday daylight hours (rotating daylight shifts as per clinical need between the hours of 7a-5p. No evenings or weekends). 25% travel to the satellite locations (Shadyside, Forbes, Mercy, St. Margaret’s, Monroeville, Wexford, Bethel Park, Natrona Heights) is required as needed for coverage purposes.

Responsibilities:

  • Refractometry: auto-refractor, transposing scripts from + to -
  • Contact lenses: insertion, removal and instructions
  • Pupillary assessment: measurement, compare and evaluate.
  • History taking to include ocular, medical, medication, social and family.
  • Lensometry: automated and manual
  • Angle assessment & dilation of pupils
  • Assist with maintaining office inventory, notifying appropriate staff when supplies are needed, restocking exam rooms, cleaning and sterilizing of instruments and cleaning patient exam rooms at end of day.
  • Visual fields: Amsler grid & confrontation fields
  • Supplemental skills: Color testing, glare test
  • Ocular Motility: Knowledge of the functions & anomalies, cover tests, stereo-acuity, nystagmus
  • Tonometry: Icare, Tonopen and the care and proper disinfection of
  • Visual acuity assessment: with and without correction, distance, near and intermediate, pinhole, best corrected, potential acuity, brightness acuity
  • Candidate will perform all aspects of patient in-take for the physicians. This includes, but is not limited to: medical history, review of medications, weight/BP, obtaining visual acuity, IOP measurements, motility and confrontational field assessment, pupil assessment, dilation, etc.
  • When needed candidate will perform imaging requested by physicians (HVF, OCT, Fundus Photos, Slit Lamp Photos, A-scans (automatic and manual), etc.
  • Assisting with in-baskets, patient messages, voicemails, reschedules, scrubbing imaging schedules in preparation of upcoming appointments, etc., and other administrative duties as assigned under the direction of the Lead Coordinator/Practice Manager
  • Cleaning/flipping exam rooms to assist with patient flow. Opening/closing/stocking duties as assigned.
  • Prepping patients for specific procedures and assisting physicians during those procedures along with be accessible when not with patients to assist physicians.
