Description:
This position is accountable for coordinating daily patient activities for the optometric department which includes preparation of patients for physician encounter, maintaining supplies, work areas and equipment for the department, proper recording and reporting of services, instructing patient on the proper care of contact lenses and eye glasses and maintaining contact with patients and other health professionals according to departmental policy and physician direction.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Confirms patient appointments
Prepares exam rooms for patient care by stocking supplies and setting/up maintaining necessary equipment
Aids in establishing schedules for patient care that insure patients are seen in proper sequence and in a timely manner.
Prepares charts and monitors documentation of patient contacts
Monitors referral dates to insure patient services have been authorized
Obtains and records patient preliminary history
Performs patient testing as instructed by physician. Testing includes but is not limited to the following:
Near and far acuity, depth perception, color perception, visual fields, GDX, applanation tonometry, indentation tonometry and pneumo-tonometry.
Confirms accuracy of contact lens and glasses deliveries and dispenses according to physician direction and patient preference.
Maintains contact lens/trial lens inventory
Adjusts and repairs glasses as necessary
Prepares patient for examination and/or procedures according to practice protocol and as directed by physician
Scribes for physician according to individual physician preference
Instructs patient in care and use of glasses or contact lenses
Insures that all patient questions have been answered and that the next steps in the treatment process, when applicable, are understood
Orders and documents the dispensing of contacts by recording the manufacturer, strength for each eye and obtaining the physician's signature on all prescriptions
Assists with and completes charge sheets for each patient visit and documents charges in patient record for items dispensed including contact lens and glasses
Responds to patient phone calls and properly directs or resolves calls
Secures physician treatment areas at the end of the day and performs cleanup/restocking activities according to department protocol
Serves as a patient advocate by seeing that patient needs are met in a reasonable and desirable way
Treats patient records and treatment information with confidentiality and insures that any release of information is in compliance with legal standards and established clinic policy.
PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS
Maintains communication with billing department, medical records and transcription to insure accurate and timely completion of patient documents and reports
Maintains contact with other MD's, DO's and OD's as directed by the supervising physician
Evaluates new ideas and methods for delivery of both medical and non-medical patient services and communicates upward
Carries out special projects as may be assigned by physician and/or management
Performs additional duties as requested by physician and/or management
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
Certificate from college or technical school or one year experience in related field. A combination of training and experience is acceptable.
COA or COT preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:
Requires a working knowledge of medical terms both general and specifically related to optometry.
Requires knowledge of testing procedures involving a variety of equipment.
Requires and understanding of contact lens care and appropriate usage.
Requires a working knowledge of AMA-CPT procedure coding and ICD-9 diagnostic coding.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
A minimum of one year experience in an optometric or ophthalmic practice or related field.
Previous personal computer experience required
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Requires a broad understanding of effective communication skills
Requires the ability to write legibly and with attention to detail
